That's the title of an article in the Wall Street Journal, one of many papers (UK Guardian, N.Y. Times) covering the news that what was before considered "junk DNA" has now been discovered to play a critical role in controlling how cells, organs and other tissues behave. What's especially noteworthy is that "junk DNA" has been hailed as a support for evolution, whereas this latest discovery vindicates Intelligent Design proponents who predicted there would be discovered value in "junk DNA." In fact, last year, one of the Intelligent Design scientists, Jonathan Wells, published the Myth of Junk DNA, anticipating the latest findings. Part of the Amazon book description reads:
Recent books by Richard Dawkins, Francis Collins and others have used this “junk DNA” as evidence for Darwinian evolution and evidence against intelligent design (since an intelligent designer would presumably not have filled our genome with so much garbage). But recent genome evidence shows that much of our non-protein-coding DNA performs essential biological functions.
Wintery Knight covers the breaking story especially well.
